6 Tips to write great cover letter

They say that within the first twenty seconds of an interview, the interviewer decides whether the candidate is a yes or a no. The same goes in case of your resume. This time however, your cover letter does the talking. Cover letter is the first thing the recruiter looks at, and has the ability to create a first impression. While googling cover letter examples does make the job a tad bit easier, it’s understandable to not be satisfied copying an internet draft. Here are a few tips for those who are determined to learn cover letter writing and take it by storm.
1. Fine-tune your tone
Every small detail matters. So does the tone in which you’re addressing your cover letter. Maintain a respectful and affirmative tone in the cover letter. Keep in mind that cover letters are not the place to bring up your weaknesses or shortcomings. Neither is it the place to brag of your achievements. Mentioning your achievements without sounding vain is the fine middle ground you have to work on establishing.
2. Don’t repeat your resume
You’re being given a chance to express yourself beyond bulletin points and marks obtained. Utilize it wisely by saying something new about yourself. Cover letter has a hint of persona that a resume lacks. By repeating the same thing that your resume contains, you are limiting yourself in the eyes of the recruiter. They will be under the impression, that, that is all you have to offer. Which is wrong in itself, because you have probably developed in many ways that isn’t fit for a resume. For example, while applying for a HR post, a candidate may point out the different ways in which he or she gained insight about healthy workplace relations.
3. Aim for the goal
Think of a situation when you meet a stranger, and both of you are trying to get to know each other. Now think of the same introduction, except this time you are replaced with a cover letter and resume. While your resume isn’t flexible to additional information, your cover letter is. And it is the best opportunity to talk about your goals. Your goals go a long way in describing who you are. Try to incorporate both your short term and long term goals in this letter. Goals really help determine if a person is ideal for a job.
4. Don’t waste words
A cover letter is meant to be brief, meaning, there is no room for any words that aren’t absolutely necessary. We’ve already discussed avoiding any resume repetitions, now cut down on any long phrases or words that aren’t essential. Replace “very eagerly looking forward to learning and developing my skill during my internship at the highly esteemed company” with “looking forward to learning during my internship”.
5. Be specific
Every applicant is going to claim to be the ideal candidate for the job. You need to mention why you’re the best. Incorporate your skill sets or personal traits, and how that makes you the best choice. “My three year experience of working as a nurse and my ease and comfort of working with children has prepared me to be the ideal candidate for Head of Paediatric Nursing” is definitely more convincing than a vague promise of “ I am confident that I am the best suited for this position”. Use numbers and statistics where you can, to highlight your accomplishments.
6. Do your Homework
Considering the fact that you’re applying to a company, you are expected to know about the company. And believe it or not, your knowledge about the company is very evident through your cover letter writing. Try picking up on the work environment and culture of the company and integrating the style into your writing. This will help create a rapport with the recruiter even if it’s just through a letter.
Whether you’re a newbie fresh out of school, or have been through multiple jobs, your proficiency can be displayed through your cover letter writing. Don’t hesitate to write and rewrite, as most people require more than one attempt to get it right.
