APA or American Psychological Association style is perhaps the most common, frequent and popular style of referencing which is used to cite different sources related to psychology, social sciences, and education. APA style originated in the year 1929, in an article published in the Psychological Bulletin describing the fundamental guidelines of this referencing style. APA citation Guide reviewed according to the 6th edition of the APA handbook, which provides the basic guidelines for in-text citations and reference chapter. A number of organisations use APA format of referencing, mainly in case of research papers. The whole pattern of APA referencing differs from that of MLA (Modern Language Association) or Harvard style of referencing. A student may be unaware of the basic principles of APA referencing style. To help yourself through the whole task of referencing and citation follow the few simple guidelines stated below:
- Understand the rudimentary elements
The first and foremost task is to understand the fundamentals of this referencing style and then start on improvising. When a student is asked to make a reference list at the end of his project work, he/she should be careful not to avoid the basic rules of APA referencing style. The student should be meticulous enough to avoid lines or spaces in between the items on the reference list and not to use numbers while referencing.
The entire reference list should be alphabetical in order with the author’s last name. It is not important to cite the name of the author’s in accordance with the alphabetical order but they should be listed in the exact way they are named according to their work(s)
While doing a citation a student must take care that all the citation, author’s name, the name of the books and other works are directly cited from genuine sources, and previously capitalized in the left upper-case.
- Cite the authors correctly
A student while using the APA format of referencing should keep in mind that all the names of the authors are cited initially with their last name, followed by their first name. When a student is citing the name of a single author, he/she may use both the first name and the last name of the author, but in case of multiple authors, a student needs to cite their last name and first initial. Citations having the name of three or more authors are usually denoted as “author 1, et al” in all the in-text citations.
- Cite the titles correctly
It is suggested to italicize the title of the entire piece when the project comprises of a complete book, a journal or a magazine. A student can also opt for underlying the name of the particular work as well. In case of referencing only a portion of a particular journal entry or a chapter of a book, italicizing is not required. A student only needs to make sure that all the important words of the title are capitalized.
Following these few steps can allow a student to cite in the APA referencing style. Every task is difficult in the beginning and the only practice makes a man perfect. So, the student needs to practice more and more to master this style of referencing.
